Job Summary:
We are seeking skilled Access Control Technicians at multiple levels (Levels 1-3, Lead Technicians, and Service Technicians) to join our growing team in San Antonio, TX. This role is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and servicing of access control systems for commercial and industrial clients.
The ideal candidates will have hands-on experience with access control hardware, cabling, and system programming. Higher-level technicians will also be responsible for system integration, project leadership, and training junior team members.
Key Responsibilities:
Level 1 – Entry-Level Technician
- Assist with installation and servicing of access control systems under supervision.
- Pull, terminate, and label low-voltage cabling.
- Mount and install card readers, door strikes, mag locks, motion detectors, and request-to-exit devices.
- Follow blueprints and technical schematics for system installations.
- Use basic hand and power tools (drills, wire strippers, crimping tools, etc.).
- Assist with basic programming of access control panels.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Follow safety protocols and industry regulations.
Level 2 – Mid-Level Technician
- Independently install, program, and troubleshoot access control systems.
- Work with industry-leading brands such as Lenel, Genetec, Honeywell, HID, Bosch, and AMAG.
- Terminate and test Cat5e, Cat6, RS-485, and fiber optic cables.
- Integrate access control systems with video surveillance and other low-voltage systems.
- Conduct system diagnostics and preventive maintenance.
- Interpret blueprints and technical documentation for complex installations.
- Provide guidance and training to Level 1 technicians.
Level 3 – Senior Technician
- Lead and manage complex access control installations and integrations.
- Configure enterprise-level access control systems and networked security solutions.
- Perform advanced programming and troubleshooting of access control software.
- Manage system upgrades and migration projects.
- Work with IT teams on network security and system configurations.
- Conduct quality control inspections to ensure compliance with industry standards.
- Train and mentor junior technicians (Level 1 & Level 2).
- Assist with project planning, material selection, and system design.
Lead Access Control Technician
- Oversee and manage on-site installation projects.
- Act as the primary point of contact for clients, project managers, and field teams.
- Supervise and mentor technicians at all levels.
- Ensure projects are completed on time and within scope while following industry best practices.
- Coordinate with general contractors, electricians, and IT staff to integrate access control systems seamlessly.
- Develop and enforce safety and quality control procedures.
- Maintain project documentation, including as-built drawings, system configurations, and service reports.
Service Technician (Access Control Systems)
- Perform diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on existing access control systems.
- Respond to service calls and provide excellent customer support.
- Maintain and update firmware and software on access control systems.
- Provide training and guidance to clients on system operation.
- Keep detailed service records and document recurring issues.
- Stay up to date on industry advancements and new technologies.
Qualifications & Experience (Varies by Level)
Technical Skills
- Experience working with Lenel, Genetec, Honeywell, HID, Bosch, and AMAG systems.
- Proficiency with multimeters, wire strippers, punch-down tools, crimpers, and soldering equipment.
- Strong knowledge of low-voltage wiring, IP-based access control systems, and networking concepts.
- Experience with PoE devices, structured cabling, and fiber optics is a plus.
- Familiarity with power supplies, relays, door hardware, and electronic locking mechanisms.
Certifications (Preferred but Not Required)
- Level 1: Basic manufacturer training or willingness to obtain certifications.
- Level 2: Certifications in Lenel, Genetec, AMAG, or similar systems.
- Level 3/Lead Technician: Advanced manufacturer certifications, CompTIA Network+, BICSI, or ESA certifications.
Soft Skills
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Ability to lead and mentor junior technicians (for Level 3 and Lead roles).
Education & Experience
- Level 1: 1+ years of experience or relevant vocational training.
- Level 2: 3+ years of access control experience.
- Level 3: 5+ years of experience in access control systems.
- Lead Technician: 7+ years of experience, including leadership roles.
- Service Technician: 3+ years of experience with troubleshooting and maintenance.
- High school diploma or GED required; technical degree in electronics, IT, or a related field is a plus.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work in various environments, including outdoor job sites, commercial buildings, and data centers.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs..
- Comfortable working at heights (ladders, lifts, or scaffolding) and in confined spaces.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime and on-call rotations for service technicians.
